Dust may have the characteristics which makes an explosive hazard. Company XYZ handles ground corn cob and other products during the mixing of multiple types of fertilizer. The ground corn cob produces fine dust when it is being unloaded from semi-trailers and transferred through a bucket elevator and horizontal conveyor to a holding bunker. The dust that is released has the potential to create an explosive environment if the dust concentration reaches the minimum explosible concentration and there is an ignition source. The dust concentration at Company XYZ was measured to determine if the minimum explosible level was reached during the unloading process. Dust accumulation levels were measured and potential ignition sources were identified and assessed to determine if they increase the risk at Company XYZ. Company policies and procedures were compared with current National Fire Protection standards. Recommendations were provided to assist Company XYZ become compliant with current regulations and reduce the risks associated with the potential for a catastrophic explosion. Housekeeping standards within Company XYZ's storage facility are well below the acceptable level and developing a housekeeping program will benefit the company by reducing the possibility of loss of life and property damage.
